Description and style
The Iris Rojo Vermouth is De Muller’s most iconic reference and one of the great legends of Reus vermouth: a product made for more than seventy years with the same formula, with the house never altering a single detail of the original recipe. Its origins date back to 1947, when Cochs S.A. in Reus developed this secret formula for the traditional vermouth of Catalonia’s vermouth capital.
In 1999, De Muller acquired Cochs and with it this unique vermouth heritage, which has become the heart of the entire Iris range. Iris Rojo is the result of macerating more than 150 Mediterranean botanicals —one of the highest counts in the category— following the historic formula of a winery with over a century of history. Among the leading botanicals are wormwood, rosemary, sage, anise, fennel and liquorice, all unmistakably Mediterranean.
Its production starts with a selection of wines to which this botanical extract is added, creating a vermouth with remarkable freshness and finesse. In the glass, it shows a dark brown colour with amber reflections and mahogany highlights.
On the nose, it is aromatic, soft and perfumed, with a perfectly balanced herbal bouquet where the Mediterranean plants stand out clearly. Its sweet, herbaceous and caramel-like aroma is its most recognisable hallmark.
On the palate, sweetness is enveloping and warm, with an intense body and an easy-drinking profile, balanced by clean acidity and a slightly bitter finish that brings together all the herbal and spiced botanicals. The aftertaste is long and highly pleasurable. Awarded Gold in the Black Vermouth category at the Premis Vinari dels Vermuts Catalans, it is the essential vermouth for understanding Reus at its most traditional and expressive.
